As spring approaches, we recommend taking several steps that will help make your pond clear and balanced.

  1. In some cases ponds may need to be cleaned by removing 50% of the water. Then use a pool or pump vacuum to remove leaves and debris from the bottom of the pond. In this case don’t forget to add a de-chlorinator as you refill your pond.
  2. If your pond doesn’t have leaves and debris in it, the above step may not be necessary.
  3. Bacteria should be added to your pond when the water temp exceeds 50 degrees F. Bacteria and algae compete for the same nutrients in the pond but bacteria are faster growing. Because of this algae will die from lack of food. Anaerobic bacteria will also reduce leaves and sludge in ponds. We have tried and used several brands of bacteria. Our recommendation for bacteria is called Happy Pond Bacteria. This bacterium has 15 strands of bacteria that work as a community to keep your pond clear and clean. Most other brands of bacteria use between 8-12 strands. When using Happy Pond Bacteria no enzymes are needed. Most other brands recommend adding enzymes, which will increase your cost.
  4. Check pumps, filters, hoses, fish and plants for any problems. Refer to our book if you have any questions about your pond.
  5. If you have any additional questions or would like to order Happy Pond Bacteria, please call us at (970) 396-7167 or (970) 371-6218.

We at Fire and Water appreciate your interest in our book. We would like to give you a little history of our company. Fire and Water started and remains a father and son company. We take great pride in the designing and construction of one of a kind water features. One of a kind means that every water feature that we construct is a different design. Fire and Water also believes that water features are not a pile of rocks with water running over them. They are a Work of Art. That is why we place every rock by hand. This makes our features look like a part of nature that has been there forever.

More information will be sent to you as the year progresses.

Thanks for your interest,

Gerald and Brandon Vannest
